A Human. Being!

~ a caffeine based life form. in search of sleep, sanity and shire. ~

I was scrolling through the pages of Newspaper, early morning. I was struck by a news, that was printed on the 4th page, in a small space allocated for it, which I bet most of us dont even come across. “Adhikari couple are semi-unconcious”. Well the health of two people, who are fasting for some unfullfillable demands, isnt something you would give much thought about when country is going through transition right? Election happened, there is a government to be made, there are seats to be finalized, there is still debate about should the president be allowed to continue or should he be replaced. Besides, the problem of what should be done about UNCP-M, and other 16 looser parties, is not a small matter. Unexpected rise of RPP-N, Nepal qualifying for the world cup and many others happened in the meantime too.

While all this were happening, Two people, fighting for their lost cause are slowly dying. I haven't heard any News from any Fms, talking about them (I got to say, I haven't checked TV for quite a while, so dont know much about it). One thing that is more offending than the government's negligence is how little coverage these two people are getting. While the Head of the Government's religious visits to Pathibhara and Halesi gets a front page space, I don't know for what reason, these two Adhikaris aren't getting any help from the media or assurance from the government.

Again this is a country where Plane crash or displacement from the runway gets a first page coverage, whereas a bus accident which killed 7 people gets a small space in the 16th page, inbetween those numerous ads for frustrated individuals running away from country, to Gulf and Malaysia, for some paltry money.

Its been almost a decade now, since the Moist rebellion has ended. Its been almost a decade that peache has been pronounced in the country, almost as many years now that the country is in transition. Its been six years republic has been established in the country, its been six years two elections and numerous government ever-since. While you continue to discuss about who did what in the election? What force did the profiteering? Or what shall the shape of new government be? Two people, two people demanding for punishment for Killers of their offspring, are slowly dying for a lost cause, neglected by bureaucracy and everyone else.

In 2003, the whole world was fretted by the emergence of SARS epidemic. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) was caused by SARS-CoV virus, which originally originated from Hong Kong and spread over 37 countries worldwide . According to WHO, a total of 8,098 people got infected with the virus, of these 774 people died worldwide. It was much talked about because, the emergence of the epidemic coincided with invasion of Afghanistan by United States, and many people feared Bioterrorism with this virus. That didn’t happen, and since 2004 no cases of SARS infection has been reported anywhere in the world.

However, a new infectious outbreak has emerged in Middle east, especially Saudi Arabia. A few cases have been reported in African and European countries too. The outbreak, Known as Middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS), is caused by a virus similar to Corona virus that caused SARS (SARS-CoV) a decade back. Caused by the infection of MERS-CoV, MERS patient was first identified in Saudi Arabia in September 2012. Since then, 144 cases of human infection have been reported worldwide, with 62 deaths. Lion's share of these deaths and infections have been reported in Saudi Arabia (121 cases of infection with 51 reported deaths).

MERS Coronavirus patients develop severe acute respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. In the later stages of infection, pneumonia and renal failure has been reported. MERS Coronavirus is a zoonotic virus, originating from Bats. Since the chances of transmission from Bat to Human route is significantly low in realistic world, many scientists, including Stanley Perlman, believes that indirect route of infection through domesticated animals might have been followed in most of the cases reported so far. It is noticeable, that in April this year, WHO rejected the chances of Human to Human transmission of the viruses. However come August, cases of human to human transmission (in close proximity) have been documented. This leads to only one conclusion, the virus is adapting in human cells.

We have seen the world wide newspapers and news portals covering the news about MERS Coronavirus outbreak. In Fact, Margaret Chan, Director general of WHO went on to say, "MERS-CoV is a global threat". Yet, hardly more than a hundred people are infected with it. Then why is everyone talking about it?

First of all, people are just talking. No significant steps has been deployed to contain the infection in the country of its origin, Saudi Arabia, and it has already travelled to Europe, Africa and many countries of the Middle east. Now that the virus has already spread to Europe and Africa, it is likely  to spread throughout the world as people continue to travel throughout the world.

If we remember the SARS outbreak, the SARS virus (SARS-CoV) adapted to human cells to such an extent that it was unable to infect bat cells. In the case of MERS, human to human transmission was considered a minor component of disease development process, but human to human transmission has been documented in both attenuated  and healthy persons. Consider this, there are more than half a million migrant Nepali workers in Middle east (I didn’t stretch myself to find the exact number), imagine how hard it will hit Nepal if corona virus infection ever reach epidemic proportions.

Until this day, the infection of MERS coronavirus hasn’t reached any alarming state, and much like H7N9 infection, it can be controlled too. A close relation between, WHO, People where the virus is found and the government is required. However, so far, no substantial steps has been taken in controlling this outbreak. Focus needs to be on identifying the unique features of the virus, finding the source of the virus, quarantining the infected and those on close proximity among other. We aren't ready with the vaccines, neither do we have necessary medications to cure MERS, preventive approach is what we should be looking too.

Moreover, we from Nepal should be monitoring the situation with close eye, and be alert for any such infections happening in Nepal. I won't be amazed, if next case of MERS coronavirus is reported in Nepal, in a migrant worker coming to celebrate Dashain/Tihar. We need to be prepared for the worst.

He is the ashtray,
An ashtray in astray.
Burnt by smoke and ashes,
Fowl smelling,
He recollects the pieces,
Lives in the tempest,
And often burns himself,
Trying to pacify the strife inside
Stormy outside, whirlwind inside,
It’s the solo that he sings now,
A solo from opera long forgotten,
There is no Diva,
Neither is symphony to the melody
No melisma, no movements.
Its all he breathes,
Memories of the ensemble they lived,
Those happiness that came in paltry,
The Baton has been passed,
What was torrid has become frigid,
And seemingly, he has ceded to destiny
That is him, the way I see,
Living a mercurial life,
Either musing, or
Living lie of felicity,
Like an ashtray, in astray.

The Phone rang suddenly at 4 in afternoon. With the sleepy voice, I responded, "Hello!". The voice on the other end said. "Let's meet in Pulchowck, will you?". "Pulchowck where? When?" and she said "The place where we ate Mo:Mo last time, in 30 minutes?", "Okey". And so I woke up, after my afternoon's unplanned nap that lasted for more than 4 hours, accidentally. And so with messed up hair, and messed up beard, I rushed to pulchowck. And yea, I still managed to look good rey, but that’s other thing.

I know the photo doesn't look great, but often decorated Mo:Mos doesn't taste as good as they look.

Today, I am only looking inside the Mo:Mo. We go to the restaurants, gaze at the menu for several minutes and when we ultimately order, irrespective of how hungry we are or what is the best food in the restaurant, or what time of the day it is, it's like a rule to order Mo:Mo. Since the college and a year more, the memories of the pieces of Mo:Mo that I stole from my friend's plates or friends stole from my plate kept haunting. For four years, I kept on eating Jhaal fry's and Aakhni/Khichuri, knowing that someday, I will say goodbye to this terrible food for good. Now that I don’t have to eat all those foods, I have become a Mo:Mo monster once again.

I went on to Wikipedia to see how is Mo:Mo defined there, and it is written "Nepali Dumplings". Somebody should add, "which is treated something like the national food in Nepal". I didn’t use to like Mo:Mo much in the early years. In our place, the only Mo:Mo we used to get was, Vegetable Mo:MO. And for an insatiable meat guzzler like me, Cabbage never tingled the palate. I became the Mo:Mo monster only when I was in high school. I had a friend, and my next door neighbor, Rishav. We used to gather our cycles after college, cycle around the streets, eat 1 and half plate (डेढ प्लेट) Mo:Mo Mo:MO king, or sometimes Himalaya Hall, almost every other day. And often return home, late and in pell-mell, and get scolded. I happened to stay alone in Kathmandu right after high school, for one month or so, and often, let me rephrase it, always, my day's or Night's or both time's meal used to be Mo:Mo, yet I never got bored of it.

Ordering a plate of Mo:Mo, a plate of Chowmein and sharing it with someone else is something that I am discovering these days. Oh! And add to it, Sausages.
